In the Centro CYD Santa María

Animals that are received in a critical or terminal condition either rest and recover or are peacefully put to rest

This centre’s organization and the care of the sicker animals are the responsibility of the Head and sole owner of the Centre, Ms Concordia Márquez, who has more than 30 years experience. You must remember that this refuge is completely privately owned and run and does not receive any public funding for the keep of the rescued animals. Neither is the centre hired out nor the animals used for any commercial use.

This recovery centre depends solely on La Asociación CYD Santa María, a charitable association, that’s completely independent from any other organization, association or public institution.

Some of the rescued horses, once they recover are given up for adoption as companion animals to families that have previously been selected by our Association. Although the majority of them reside in the Centre till their dying day because due to the ill treatment suffered and/or to the fact that they’ve been abandoned they have permanent physical and or psychological repercussions that require special attention. This is why our priority is to have sponsors that help us to guarantee their feed and veterinary care. If once you have read this page you think that we do a good job please SPONSOR, to do so please contact one of the following e mails: viki@cydanimals.com (the Association’s secretary) and hazel@cydanimals.com (volunteer worker), or go directly to  SPONSOR A HORSE. LINK

We take this opportunity to thank Hazel Pettit and her family for her continuous support and faith that she has deposited in this project. Although between them the Association and the Shelter resolve more that 200 cases a year, the reality is that the weight of all the investigations and the following legal procedures fall on two sisters, Concordia and Virginia. For this reason we ask for help from this web page so as to continue reporting the cases of ill treatment and or abandonment, and so as to also guarantee the well being of the animals that have already been rescued.

Hazel Pettit and Bennie van Lith, volunteer workers since the very beginning of the centre CYD Santa María, will speak on our behalf in -English and Dutch respectively- so as to spread the word on this project amongst animal lovers. It’s difficult to believe but after six years of work we haven’t got enough volunteers to help us clean and care for the animals at the Shelter.

If you would like to visit you are welcome to do so at the Centro CYD Santa María, but so as to guarantee the weaker animal’s tranquillity we do not accept unorganized visits. Thank you.

I have been a volunteer at CYD since it open in 2006, it’s the best thing l have ever done, its lovely to go to the centre and hear the horses talking to you as you walk pass them to get brushes or head collars and leads etc, they can’t wait to come out for a walk.  I help out anyway l can, walk them, brush them, clean wounds etc, what ever has to be done I do. I have in the past helped other charities and still do, but this one touched my heart by far.

The place and people (Concordia and Viki) that run the centre are both very special people in more ways than one.  They both live and breathe the animals 24/7.  l have never seen so much tenderness, dedication and love from two people, nothing is too much trouble for an animal.

It has its highs and lows as most of the horses & animals are very sick when they come in, and some do not pull through but it’s worth its weight in gold to see most of them get better when they have been so badly treated.  I am truly thank full that l can help and do some good for them.  I can only speak for myself but it’s a lovely place to help out.
