NEWS UPDATE
Garry Leigh who is our Patron for CYD has been so kind to us in the past has now given us a cheque again, what a lovely Christmas present that was for Concordia she can now breath and have a good Christmas thanks to Garry and his kindest. We can not put into words just how much this means to us, that Garry helps us the way he has. A BIG THANK YOU GARRY www.garrypeterleigh.com
28th November 2009 we had a race night at Alhaurin Golf Club House this was the first time we have gone inland, we had a good turnout it raised 932 Euros. Laura made the entire deserts herself and they were out of this world.
End of September we had 6 horses go to Holland, this is something new and we hope it takes off. I think they have homes lined up for most of them now. So if anyone out there needs to move a horse from one country to another check out their website www.paardentransporten.eu
End of October 2009 Charlotte from El Jinete –riding school took another one of our horses, this one is in foal. She will stay with Charlotte until the foal is born and weaned and then she will be looking for a home for them both. So anyone looking for a horse or small pony Charlotte is helping CYD in finding homes for our horses, ring her on 680987044. Any young children /Adults wanting to learn to ride Charlotte gives riding lessons plus courses on how to look after horses, give her a ring and find out more. Charlotte has had a calendar made up for 2010 all the money goes to El Jinete but for the up keep of CYD Horses there so why not go a long and buy one.
13th November Musica and Almendro have found a home not far from La Cala, these two are very young a hand full but Larraine knows what she is doing, she runs a riding school and also runs jumping and dressage competitions, we thank her and wish them all the very best.
21st December 2009 we bought a new horse to the centre, only because of Garry giving us the money that we could do this, this mare was named Blue Eyes her owner had abused her, she had a large lump on her neck sadly she died the next evening, the reason l am telling the story is because the last 24 hours of this horses life she was free of cruelty and happy to run around with her tail in the air and look happy at our finca.
Summer is here with a vengeance. It is so hot at the
centre but the horses are doing very well, it’s just the
volunteers melting away in this heat 1 find it very hot
at the moment.
June was sad for us as Rafaela and Arco went to Holland, 1 hear you all saying why when you look after a horse for over a year its not easy just to say goodbye as Concordia knows all to well, we just hope they are well looked after and loved. We will be checking on them to make sure they are.
Marilyn and Siloe are both doing very well, we have nicknamed Siloe — Damon because he is a little devil he chases you around the paddock and then if he can bites you now what’s that all about 1 say, 1 know his only young. They have now been moved to another paddock with Anna, Claudia, and Reina. Siloe and Reina get on very well chasing each other around the paddock its great to watch.
Dante has now been gelded and is turning into a lovely
gentleman. Charlotte at El Jinete is now training Dante
he went to stay there end of July, he will stay for a
few months then we hope we have a family waiting to take
him.
Captain Hook was returned to us, he was with a family for about a year, his is a beautiful grey gelding and big. Once again this poor horse came back with a problem his feet were very over grown, and when you put a saddle on him 1 would hate to think what has gone on with him. We have found another family that live just around the corner to us and is going to take him on and let him rest for a year then have him retrained, so it looks like his going to be airtight .He went to his new home on the 4” August.
Pulga another gelding returned to us as the person knows longer rode him, also grey. We have a family waiting for him; they are building stables so they can take him and Captain Hook which is lovely. So in the next few weeks these horses should be off to their new home. He went with Captain Hook on the 4” August.
Beginning of the month we had Bollycao returned to us, he has a sweet itch problem and where he went he was rubbing himself to death on their trees and anything else he could get too. What is so upsetting is any horse that has a problem the new owners are always told what the problem is with a horse, this poor horse suffered so much undue pain were he just rubbed himself till it bleed all over his body, his back, neck, bottom, legs, his been back a few weeks and is looking good so we will now be looking for a home for him.
Beginning of the month Concordia saw a horse that she had seen a year before and she was still very skinny, with the help of the four Dutch volunteers who made a donation to pay for the transport she was bought to the centre, and just in the nick of time. She came in on the 2/7/09 and on the l5 July she gave birth to a baby girl and what a lovely little girl she is. The mum has been named after the four Dutch volunteers their names are Floske, Robin, Diede, Sterre, a letter from each girl was taken to make the name FRODIS & this little girl was born with problems as she fell from the paddock down to were our hens are so she had a bad neck an open leg and inside the leg, the girls and Concordia took it in turns to watch her thought the night for the next few days and now she is doing well. The chiropractor came and did his magic and she is much better now.
Bubu his doing well still can’t walk in a straight line but then who can, his latest thing is to chase well not chase but to make Fidle move around the sand school still gives them both a bit of exercise.
Catalina - what a different she has come on so well, with a lot of time from Concordia and Sergio this mare now comes to you for a cookie and doesn’t run from you.
Middle of July we had the Navy Americans come to the centre again, they spent all day with us doing odd jobs , they are coming back soon as we didn’t get it all finished.
Middle of June we had a call from a vet about a horse that wild dogs had attacked, so off Concordia went again to find this horse which she did and brought back to the centre. His owner decided to leave him tied in a field were he fell and the dogs bite his back quarters. His wound is practically cured thanks to our vet Maite and the girls from Holland that cleaned his wound every day. He’s been named ALMENDRO.
The latest in is a beautiful grey mare around a year old, this mare has a bad leg open wound and under her tummy not sure what happen to her. She is a bit timid but a lovely looking mare. She has been named Ojos Grande — Big Eyes, She has now gone to a new home.
Estrella having her leg cleaned and the three girls dancing and singing to her. We had a very nice lady called Amanda who paid for Estrella to have her leg x-rayed to see if she could have an operation on her leg, many thanks Amanda.
UP DATE MARCH- APRIL 2009
Well l have to say the ladies have been busy (Concordia and Viki) so much has gone on this passed month.
First the little dog we rescued last month still needs a loving home, so if anyone out there would like a lovely little dog please email us.
End of March our stallion went to a new home he was called Bollycao. He is now with John and Edwina with their other horse.
24th March we had 21 horses and 1 foal arrived at the centre, well l say arrived it took a lot organization between the Police, Concordia and Viki it went like clock work volunteers to help, transport for all the horses. We had 19 Shetland ponies 1 mare and foal and 1 stallion, donkeys and mules went to another rescue centre. We have homed the mare and foal and have about 10 Shetlands.
On the 2nd April we had a surprise one of the ponies gave birth to a lovely little boy who is now called SILOE the mother has been named Marilyn Munroe, the mother has a home to go to but can’t go yet because of Siloe (the foal) he is to young for her to leave, plus we have found someone for him it had to be someone very special and it is Concordia who has fallen in love with him so we will keep you updated on him. He is lovely to watch running round in the sand school but she has got her hands full with him his no push over.
The stallion that came in with the ponies has been named Dante by one of the volunteers that have falling in love with him, he is a gentle horse.
Beginning of April we had Mandy returned to us, owning to the family returning to the U.K. she is a lovely mare and my horse Moonlight has fallen head over heels in love with her.
14/4/09 2 of our ponies have gone to a pony club in La Cala de Mijas called El Jinete which is on the way to La Cala Golf, so we will keep you informed about these two little gems Billy & Bella.
13th April Concordia with Sergio and the police went off to rescue yet another pony, getting this one wasn’t going to be easy. A lot of people think off they go pick the pony/horse up put in the trailer and back to the centre, if only it was like that. The police put their own life on the line with these horses, any one that knows about horses knows how quick they can knick, knock you down and with this pony it took about 21/2 hours just to catch her, we can’t thank the Guardia Civil enough for all their help time and dedication that they give to these animals. This poor mare has a bad nose which we thought was by having a head collar on and was never taken off we wish that was all it was; the vet wasn’t sure what was wrong. Someone came to the centre and saw her and said “oh they went too far with that one”, asked what he meant he said in Andalucía with young ponies/horses they break their noses so they can be ridden easier, and they have a special tool to do it. I find this really sickening to think this goes on and it is common here. This little girl has been named by Viki and she is called CATALINA which l have to say is a lovely name. In the few weeks she has been with us she come to the stable door but doesn’t stay around long then goes back to the back of the stable but its early days yet.
20/04 We had a bit of fun today Jumper and Caliza racing up and down at the end of the finca all of a sudden Caliza jumped the fence , didn’t clear it so she took the fence down still she look pleased with herself Jumper just followed her.
21/4/09 Lucky which is a lovely pony came into the centre on the 18th February, he was a bit timid and didn’t like quick movement on his right side. Well l am happy to say we have found him a lovely family and the young girl is called Leigh who will now be looking after him, his has been renamed and has a friend who he is now living with. We wish them well.
25/4/09 2 ponies went to the neighbours today, after letting us graze the ponies on their land they fell in love with 2 of them, which was lucky for us, so Maureen and Kevin good luck.
26/4/09 Well l was told today that Marilyn Munro isn’t going now, the family that were going to take her have changed their minds, still as my old mum use to say its all done for a reason and l do believe that there is someone out there just waiting for her.
Galante is doing well, his leg still playing him up but getting around the finca fine and his quick if you have food.
End of April and we only have 3 Shetland ponies left and 2 of them should be going in the next week, so things have worked out nicely. We are still looking for a home for Marilyn but as l said before she can’t go yet anyway.
We would like to thank all the volunteers for their help with the ponies plus what they do at the centre for us.
News & Up-date (February/March 2009
This year is going so fast l can’t believe we are in March 2009 already. Only three months into the year and we have already lost some horses, they will be greatly missed but they will always be in our hearts.
Rafaela and Arcoris
Rafaela and Arcoris are both doing very well, each morning they are both put out in their paddock so Arcoris can run around and mum is right behind him making sure that his fine. Rafaela is a great mum in every way she always keeps an eye on him. Arcoris is growing so much he eats little bits of hay and has been for sometime now. It is lovely to see him running around in the paddock.
Galante – Hasn’t been well, it’s been very much touch and go with him, but this is one horse with a big fight to live. Around 2 years go we thought we were going to lose him, but each time this beautiful horse fights back. He has got the most beautiful eyes l have ever seen. At the moment he is doing fine, his leg plays him up but he still checks on all the other horses as he walks round the finca on his own.
Reina
Reina – What can l say about this little girl, she is the apple of Concordia’s eye, l call her mean machine only because if you have food this little girl will stop at nothing to get it from you, she will chase you all round the finca till she gets it. She is growing into a lovely little mare. She has just moved into a paddock with Anna and Claudia which is working well.
Claudia - Now has someone that cares for her 4 days a week and she looks much better for it, when Mercedes walks down you can see Claudia watching her as if to say, come on l am here waiting for you. She looks a happier mare now, it makes a big different when they know someone is coming for them.
Bubu
Bubu - This is one lovely boy and l love him to bits, l walk and brush him and take care of this one as know one comes for him. He has been very ill this week and we thought we were going to lose him, but he's one tuff cookie. The vet was called out as he could not stand up, but he's holding on but not out of the woods yet.
In March at around 11 O’clock at night we had a call from the police about a dog that was in a bad way, that’s all we knew at the time, we were not prepared for what we were about to see. We thought we had seen most things but this poor dog was in a bad way, she wouldn’t let us near her she had been beaten so badly from the day he got her. The room she was kept in was so small of which l don’t think she had every been outside from the day he got her, the smell was that bad and you couldn’t help but tread in dogs muck to get too her. We could not see any food, we think she was eating the muck, anyway at 2 in the morning we gave up as we couldn’t get too her without her biting us, but we were not giving up on her.
The next day in the afternoon off we went again with tools in hand ready not to come home without her. We got her but she was in a bad way, her fur was so badly matted that she had to have it all shaved off, plus the vet put her on a drip as she was so dehydrated. She is now in a foster home waiting for someone to love her and take her home.
In the next month or so we are hoping to start campaigning for a change in the law that horses are no longer under live stock, but are domestic animals. This will take some 75,000 signatures so we are putting a petition on the website so that anyone living here can sign it, but you have to be a resident here in Spain to do so.
We have two students from Sweden with us, Marie and Emelie, they have come here for 3 weeks to obtain work experienced through their school, they are both hard working and nothing is too much trouble for them. This happened last year from the very same school and I must say it's working very well indeed.
